NPCs will have different reactions when interacting with each brother, where sometimes only one of the brothers can get specific information from specific NPCs. There is also action buttons respective for each brother. The player controls each brother with one of the analog sticks, allowing to move each character freely and individually. They must overcome obstacles and solve puzzles by working together. Gameplay is based around the two brothers helping and assisting each other to overcome the challenges of the world.
All of the in-game dialogue is spoken in a fictional language based on Lebanese Arabic, thus the story is conveyed through actions, gestures and expressions. Should either brother fall from a great height or get injured, the game restarts at a recent checkpoint. The player progresses by manipulating the two brothers at the same time to complete various puzzles, often requiring the player to manipulate both brothers to perform differing functions (such as one distracting a hostile non-player character while the other makes their way around). The older brother is the stronger of the two and can pull levers or boost his younger brother to higher spaces, while the younger one can pass between narrow bars. The controller triggers cause the respective brother to interact with the game world, such as talking to a non-player character or grabbing onto a ledge or object. The brothers are moved individually by two thumbsticks on the controller. Gameplayīrothers: A Tale of Two Sons is presented from a third-person view overlooking the two brothers. A few game-breaking bugs in the initial Xbox 360 version and a slightly tricky control scheme dampen the experience, but not enough to stop this unique adventure from earning a resounding recommendation. While the actual challenge on offer is minimal, the story is so strong, the lands traversed so beautiful, the music so enchanting that the lack of difficulty is not an issue. Developed by Starbreeze Studios, this is a truly wonderful tale that masterfully immerses you in an emotionally rich, fantastical setting. I’ve never played an adventure game that handles both concepts with such a deft touch as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
